Vin De Syrah Spirits and Wine Parlor in its third year now, this unique hidden wine bar is a not to be missed stop when visiting San Diego. In the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, 901 5th Avenue, here you’ll find an upscale boutique fantasy theme which provides excellent conversation for first dates and those easily bored. The girls will love the whimsical decor, modeled after Alice in Wonderland, Paris brassieres, and New York’s urban cosmopolitan bars.

I like to take out of towners here and watch as they try to discover how to get in to the place to start with (it is somewhat hidden from the road and the door to get in is not easily seen either). Hint – look for the stairs to go under ground next to the Melting Pot restaurant. This most recent visit to Vin De Syrah, my niece Courtney commented, “I would go to this place every night if it was in Tucson,” and “I want to decorate my place like this.”

The Tiny Bubbles flight of 3 generous tastes of champagne for $10.00 is what I ordered, Courtney had the Sangria flight, also with 3 generous (full high ball glasses) of tastes of white, red, and spiced red sangria for $12.00. There is a selection of 10 different flights and also a create your own choice.

Also on the menu are light bites including cheese plates, paninis, and dessert tastes ($8 to $25 dollars) – food served until 10pm. Later in the evening the place transforms to more of a nightclub than wine bar with a DJ, dancing, and a cover charge. On Friday and Saturday nights a special treat is the candlelit wine tasting from 8-9pm at the long center table.
